Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Wheke" mean ?

Wheke is a Maori word, meaning "octopus". And huge and legendary one.

Why this name "Wheke" ?

We wanted to do another wink to New-Zealand, where many Open Source software for libraries are born. The first being Koha, of course, but you can also think about Greenstone, Kete.

We also wanted to symbolise search in multiple sources as an octopus, catching everything anywhere with it's tentacles.

And the logo ?

The logo is a merge of the "drupal drop", the Drupal logo, and the tentacles of an octopus.

There's not specific explanation to purple color. We could pretend that it's related to symbolism like creativity and spirituality, but that would be a lie. We just choose this color because we liked it.

What is a Drupal distribution ?

Drupal is a framework to build a CMS. To the kernel, you can add themes (for design) and modules (for features).

Drupal + theme(s) + module(s) can be grouped in a consistent tool, called "distribution". Installing a distribution is much faster and easier than installing each part of it. And you can get a fully working website in just a few minutes.

What's the licence of Wheke ?

Wheke has the same licence as Drupal. All the source code is published on Drupal website. That's the best guarantee that the software is and will stay Open Source ! And if you want to contribute, we will be more than happy to add you to the authors lists, and the licence could not be changed without your agreement anymore !
